Amsterdam’s Conspiracy of Kindness Kind of Succeeds
As Trump-era movies go, Amsterdam is, at least, a surprising one. David O. Russell’s new film, in theaters now, takes its time getting to its point, which is essentially that fascism is best fought with love, camaraderie, and a little cunning. It’s not terribly clear how much the nation was clamoring to hear that particular message delivered by this particular filmmaker, but something of Amsterdam’s mannered goodwill manages to seep through Russell’s exhaustingly, typically busy contraption.
