In Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope,’ Spectacle Triumphs Over Substance

“What’s a bad miracle?,” O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) asks his sister, Emerald (Keke Palmer), in the new film Nope (in theaters July 22). O.J. is pretty sure he’s just seen a U.F.O., and is contemplating what to do with a vision like this: a moment as surprising and otherworldly as a divine act, but one that arrived ominously, heavy with a sense of danger.
