John Oliver Says Football Shouldn’t Exist: “People Kill Themselves for Our Entertainment”

During his tenure at Last Week Tonight, late-night host John Oliver has criticized many aspects of the NFL—from commissioner Roger Goodell’s handling of domestic-abuse claims against the league’s players to alleged workplace mistreatment of cheerleaders. On Sunday’s episode, Oliver flat-out declared that football “maybe shouldn’t exist” as a sport. “There is already prime-time programming where people kill themselves for our entertainment—it’s called Monday Night Football,” Oliver said toward the beginning of a segment on crime reporting. “Happy concussion season, football fans!
