Pharoah Sanders, Saxophonist and Spiritual Jazz Innovator, Dies at Age 81
Pharoah Sanders, the tenor saxophonist who expanded the language of jazz in the mid-20th century, died on Saturday in Los Angeles, as per a social media update from the record label Luaka Bop. The Arkansans-born instrumentalist and composer was a key member of the post-bebop movement of what is known as modal jazz, and along with his mentor John Coltrane popularized a sub-genre called spiritual jazz.
